Georgetown Steers Dinner Series: Bob Steers and Paul Quinlan

In 2016, The Georgetown Steers Center for Global Real Estate and the Georgetown Real Estate Alliance partnered to launch the Georgetown Steers Dinner Series. The Dinner Series provides an intimate forum for Georgetown undergraduate, MBA and recent alumni to have dinner with real estate industry leaders and supporters of the program.

Dinner hosts have included Paula Schaefer (B ’81), Senior Vice President at Clarion Partners; Sonny Kalsi (B ’90), Founder of GreenOak; Michael Graziano (B ’88), Managing Director at Goldman Sachs; Marty Cicco (P ’14, P ’17), Managing Director at Evercore, Ed Walter (L ’80), Former CEO of Host Hotels & Resorts and Tim Naughton, CEO of AvalonBay.

This summer, the Dinner Series has been proud to host the Steers Center namesake, Bob Steers (B ’75, P ’06, ’08, ’10), CEO of Cohen & Steers and Paul Quinlan (B ’99), CFO of Blackstone Real Estate Advisors. The dinners that took place on July 11th and 12th were attended by a diverse group of young Georgetown Hoyas, eager to hear advice from two veteran real estate executives.

Both groups enjoyed engaging conversations covering topics such as academics, how to maximize business school’s value, macroeconomic trends, private vs. public real estate investing, and the health of various property types, not to mention the occasional entertaining career anecdotes from both hosts.

“It was a treat to meet and network with the next generation of Hoya real estate professionals,” said Mr. Steers. “Connections were made and the evening was full of great questions and innovative ideas.”

Given the timing of the dinners, the recent acquisition of Whole Foods by Amazon spurred meaningful conversation regarding the retail sector and continuation of such consolidation trends. Additional topics of conversations centered on career advice- a high priority topic among students and recent alumni alike.

“A key takeaway for me was to be confident in your career path,” said Bill Martin (MSB ’18) summer associate with RXR Realty who attended the dinner with Quinlan. “Rather than just slugging through work thinking it’s the right way to get ahead, take a step back and focus on where you want to be and the exact path to get there.”

An increasingly positive outcome of the Steers Dinner Series has been the connections made not just between students and dinner hosts, but also among students themselves, many of whom are at different stages in their academic or professional careers.

Mustafa Popal (MSB’18) summer associate in Tishman Speyer’s Leadership Development Program and current President of Georgetown’s Graduate Real Estate Society, attended the dinner with Mr. Steers. “Academics, job placement, the quality of on and off campus events culminating with the annual Real Estate Luminaries series, and the cohesiveness and strength of the alumni network all clearly illustrate the center’s value,” said Popal following the dinner. “The discussions were so engaging that no one ordered food until almost two hours into the evening!”
