The Georgetown Steers Center for Global Real Estate and the Georgetown Real Estate Alliance have partnered to launch the Georgetown Steers Dinner Series. The Dinner Series brings together accomplished Georgetown alumni working in the real estate field with Georgetown real estate students for intimate dinners. Dinner conversations range in topics from career advice to macro real estate trends.
Evin Broder, a second-year Georgetown MBA, helped launch the program. “The Georgetown Steers Dinner Series offers the students the unique opportunity to engage with industry titans, in a setting different than any other networking event available. The small size and informal environment really allows the students to connect with the alumni on a much more meaningful level.” Evin will be joining Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Real Estate, Gaming, and Lodging investment banking group in the fall of 2017.
Georgetown Alumni in Washington DC and New York City have generously donated their time to coach current students. Recently, Sonny Kalsi (B ‘90), Founding Partner of GreenOak Real Estate, hosted five students. The conversation centered on international real estate markets, career advice and personal journeys.
“I really enjoyed the opportunity to meet some current and recently graduated students of MSB,” said Mr. Kalsi. “They were enthusiastic and not shy at all about asking tough and direct questions; perhaps the small group setting helped.” Kalsi went on to joke, “Once I learned Bob Steers was paying for dinner, I ordered even better wine, which certainly facilitated the discussion!”
“Getting to hear Paula’s tenured industry perspective in an intimate setting was truly one of the best experiences of my Georgetown MBA,” said Alex Yaraghi, second-year MBA student, of his recent dinner with Paul Schaefer (B’ 81), Senior Vice President of Clarion Partners.
Students took advantage of being in New York City for internships this summer by meeting with New York-based alumni. The Dinner Series will continue in Washington, DC now that the school year has begun again. Among future Dinner Series hosts are W. Edward Walter (L ‘80), President & Chief Executive Officer of Host Hotels & Resorts.
Georgetown Real Estate Alliance co-chair Lawrence Palumbo (B ’00) is pleased with how many Georgetown alumni have reached out to lend their support to current students. “When we launched the Alliance in November 2015, we were flooded with calls and emails from alumni in real estate who wanted to help. The Dinner Series is another way Georgetown alumni are stepping up to give guidance and perspective to current real estate students, and we’re thrilled at the success of our partnership with the Steers Center.”
“What I have appreciated most about the dinners– aside from the alumni involvement– is the opportunity for MBA-undergraduate collaboration as both groups of students are represented at each dinner,” said Broder. “Initiatives like these really allow the Steers Center to illustrate its ability to bring the Georgetown family together.”
